SCIGHERA wins MOTOSTUDENT 2018, the world championship

SCIGHERA, the motorcycle designed by Polimi Motorcycle Factory won MOTOSTUDENT, the worldwide championship held in Aragon where teams of university students from all over the world competed in several challenges.
NCS | Newcast Services followed the team step by step during the process of design from the project to the prototype of the motorcycle.

WHAT IS MOTOSTUDENT?

MOTOSTUDENT (5th edition in 2018) is an international competition for motorcycles designed by teams of university students from all over the world who build the motorcycle from scratch.
The race is becoming more relevant year after year both at a university level but also for the motorcycling sector too. More than 1500 students from more than 50 different universities in the world are involved.
The mission of every single team is to design, create and evaluate the motorcycle prototype that will be put to the test at the Aragon racing circuit.
Teams have to pretend to be the manufacturer and try to sell their product to costumers developing the industrial project of a motorcycle starting from a prototype.

 


COMPETITION STAGES

The competition is divided into two stages: MS1 and MS2.

• MS1: design, innovation and industrialization.
At this stage teams present their industrial project related to the hypothetical mass production of the prototype. Following rewards are assigned at this stage:
- best design award
- best technical innovation

• MS2: dynamic tests.
The second stage comprises several dynamic tests to evaluate some aspects like acceleration, braking and manoeuvrability.
This stage concludes with a speed race made of 8 laps.

POLIMI TEAM AND NCS

Polimi Motorcycle Factory is the team of the department of Mechanic Engineering of the Politecnico of Milan, born in 2015 from the ambition of 5 future engineers.
The experience of NCS in Moto2 Championships and also in other international championships together with the employment of innovative technologies and also the passion for the automotive sector, prompted the relation between NCS and Polimi. For these reasons NCS is main sponsor of the project and realized the official prototype.

 

NCS followed the team in this two-years journey, realising hulls, airbox, structural coatings, frame and swingarm made of steel and composite materials.
The technology used for the realization of the aerodynamic and structural part is called XtremeHS+.

NCS | Newcast Services’ experience, competences and also 3D printing technologies were available for the team of engineers of the PoliMi. SCIGHERA is the final result, a great value result.

 

 

SCIGHERA is the name of the motorcycle prototype designed by the PoliMi Motorcycle Factory. Scighera in Milanese dialect means “fog”, an omnipresent element during the period of work of the team!

 

RESULTS

This project, lasted two years, with tests and obstacles along the way, has payed off during the first weekend of October in Aragon, Spain.

PoliMi Motorcycle Factory finished 2nd at the MS1 stage and also achieved the top of the podium in dynamic tests, acceleration tests and highest speed.
The team also gained extra points thanks to the 2nd position in the mechanic test, the 2nd position in qualifications and 2nd fastest lap.
Winning the final race brought the Milanese team directly to the world champion title of Motostudent 2018.

SCIGHERA vince il campionato mondiale MOTOSTUDENT 2018

SCIGHERA, la moto progettata dal team Polimi Motorcycle Factory ha vinto ad Aragon il campionato MOTOSTUDENT, un campionato mondiale fra le università di tutto il mondo.
NCS | Newcast Services ha seguito passo dopo passo i ragazzi del team nella realizzazione della moto, dal progetto al prototipo.

CHE COS’è IL MOTOSTUDENT ?

Il campionato MOTOSTUDENT, arrivato alla sua quinta edizione, è una competizione motociclistica internazionale che vede sfidarsi team universitari da tutto il mondo a bordo di prototipi da competizione interamente progettati e costruiti dai team stessi.
La competizione sta diventando ogni anno più importante, sia a livello universitario che motociclistico: sono coinvolti infatti più di 1500 studenti di oltre 50 università di tutto il mondo.
L’obiettivo di ciascuna squadra è quello di progettare, realizzare e valutare il prototipo delle moto da corsa che sarà messa alla prova nel circuito di Aragon.
I team si devono comportare come una casa produttrice e cercare di vendere il loro prodotto al pubblico, preparando il progetto industriale di una moto di serie derivata dal prototipo.

 


LE FASI DELLA COMPETIZIONE

La competizione si articola in due fasi, MS1 e MS2.

• MS1: design, innovazione industrializzazione.
In questa fase i team presentano il progetto industriale relativo all’ipotetica produzione di massa del prototipo.
Si assegnano qui:
- best design award
- best technical innovation

• MS2: prove dinamiche.
La seconda fase consiste in una serie di prove dinamiche per valutare: accelerazione, frenata, manovrabilità per concludere poi con una gara di velocità di 8 giri.

IL TEAM POLIMI ed NCS

Polimi Motorcycle Factory è il team del dipartimento di Ingegneria Meccanica del Politecnico di Milano, nato del 2015, dall’ambizione di 5 futuri ingegneri.
L’esperienza di NCS nei campionati Moto2 e altre competizioni internazionali, l’impiego di tecnologie all'avanguardia e la passione innata per l’automotive hanno spinto l’azienda a supportare a pieno questo progetto ed essere il partner ufficiale del team per la realizzazione del prototipo ufficiale.

NCS ha seguito i ragazzi in questo percorso durato oltre due anni, realizzando carene, airbox, rivestimenti strutturali e telaio e forcellone in acciaio e materiali compositi.
XtremeHS+ è il nome della tecnologia utilizzata per la realizzazione di tutto il comparto aerodinamico e strutturale della moto.

NCS | Newcast Services ha quindi messo a disposizione del team la sua esperienza, competenza nonché le più avanzate tecnologie di stampa 3D  lasciando al team di ingegneri la completa libertà di pensiero.
Il risultato è di altissimo valore e si concretizzato in SCIGHERA

 

 

SCIGHERA è il nome del prototipo della moto realizzata dai ragazzi del team Polimi Motorcycle Factory. In dialetto milanese significa “nebbia”, un elemento caratterizzante il lavoro quotidiano dei ragazzi!

 

I RISULTATI

Questo progetto, frutto del percorso intrapreso dal team due anni fa, fatto di prove, ostacoli test ha trovato il successo il primo weekend di Ottobre presso il circuito spagnolo di Aragon.

Polimi Motorcycle factory ha conquistato il secondo posto assoluto nella fase MS1 e ha saputo dare il meglio anche nelle prove dinamiche conquistando il gradino più alto del podio nei test di accelerazione e velocità massima.
La squadra ha inoltre ottenuto ulteriori punti grazie al secondo posto raggiunto nel test meccanico, secondo posto conquistato nelle qualifiche e secondo giro più veloce.
La vittoria conquistata nella gara finale ha portato infine il team milanese a diventare campione del mondo Motostudent 2018.
